Cast iron pipelines buried between the 1840s and 1980s account for a significant proportion of urban water supply systems. Bursts of large-diameter cast iron water mains cause extensive financial losses and impacts on transportation and society. This study introduced methodologies to quantify the impact of cyclic pressures on corroded pipes and leak-before-break analysis for preventing pipe bursts.
