Many types and styles of veil in the ancient world - evident in the extensive variety of veil terminology - were worn by women to construct and display their identities. This study examines the practice of veiling women as it occurred in the Ancient Near East, with a particular focus on women and their veils in the Hebrew Bible (HB) and the ways they negotiate their identities for their own purposes by utilising personal veil garments in deliberate, active dress choices – even when dress is prescribed for them.
