(Mis)communication in the Use of English as a Lingua Franca: A Study of University Students in Australia

posted on 2018-01-31, 03:36 authored by MAHNAZ HALLIn Australian universities, where students and staff originate from disparate cultural and linguistic backgrounds, English is used as a lingua franca (ELF) with implications that have yet to be fully understood. This study investigates ELF naturally occurring communication among 107 students from 23 countries at Monash University. It explores the extent of miscommunication occurrences in such interactions and analyses how they are managed and resolved. The results show a considerable number of miscommunication instances which were attributable to pronunciation, lexis, syntax, and pragmatics. The findings also reveal that the majority of these instances did not involve explicit breakdown in communication.
