New Zealanders have become the largest nationality group of people who experience visa cancellation on character grounds and who are then deported from Australia. This phenomenon arose following amendments to Section 501 (S501) of the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) – on visa cancellation or refusal on character grounds – in December 2014. Many who are deported are long-term residents: they have lived in Australia for 10 years or more and consider themselves Australians. In this thesis I explain how and why New Zealanders have come to experience visa cancellation and criminal deportation in such high numbers, and what have been the impacts on convicted New Zealander long-term residents who have been deported and on family members of deported New Zealanders.
