This doctoral project is by studio research and written exegesis. This research consists of a series of essays on different artists and writers, an interview with Bruce Hainley, and several bodies of work that I have produced during my candidacy. They are unified by an abiding interest in confusion and voice. In the research, confusion, along with associated ideas of ambiguity and illness, is presented as an alternative to normative modes of meaning-making, communication and power.
