This project examines the interface between western music culture and the potential existential crises confronting the more-than-human world. The often unquestioned assumption of human transcendence and exceptionalism underpins every aspect of contemporary life, from the ravaging of the environment to the exploitation and disregard for all subjects deemed non-human. These are the same cultural tenets that inform many aspects of western music culture; cultural rituals that shape futures and manifest values. Through artistic research methods, this project interrogates how aspects of western music culture enshrine a belief in exceptionalism, and contends that this culture could be reshaped. The project's original contribution to knowledge is in its creative works that provide speculative models for post-exceptionalist musical practice and More-than-human-music.
