The West has generally understood Tibetan Buddhism through a composite process of cultural transfers and filters. Christianity, Esoteric currents, Psychology and Art have contributed to transfer meanings that do not belong to this religious tradition, thereby creating perceptions that misrepresent it.
This study investigates the causes, nature and extent of these western misconceptions of Tibetan Buddhism, and demonstrates how this affects its perception from a global socio-religious standpoint.
