While today's aircraft are much quieter than those of yesteryear, the exhaust from modern jet engines still produces intense sound. The next generation of supersonic airliners require engines whose exhaust stream is also supersonic. This thesis involves the study of a particular form of noise unique to these supersonic exhaust streams containing shock waves. The key contribution to the research field is the application of a novel theoretical framework (the "wavepacket model") to study the generation and radiation characteristics of broadband shock-associated noise. The model is based on pairing mathematical descriptions of waves with structures observed in jet flows.
