Visualising Oman: An Exploration of National Identity Through Participatory Photography and Printmaking

thesis
posted on 2022-10-10, 00:12 authored by MOHAMMED AHMED MOHAMMED AL-RIYAMI
This research project develops a collaborative and participatory graphic design process through which visual vocabulary associated with Omani identity is considered and reconfigured through an art/design practice. The project is the result of the observation that current visual approaches to national representation of Oman are largely top-down and institutional constructions that reduce visual representation of Oman to a static and traditional iconography. In response, the research provides a methodological framework for reflecting on this inherited visual field and develops new and collaborative works that rethink, challenge, expand and move beyond such received visual vocabulary.
