The shrimp production industry in Malaysia can be affected by a devastating disease known as acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) caused by the pathogenic bacterium, Vibrio parahaemolyticus. As one of the most deadly shrimp diseases worldwide, it has caused huge economic losses due to the high mortality rate. Here, the genetic variability of the pathogen is explored in detail and an improved detection method is developed. Gene expression studies were also undertaken to better understand the inner workings of the pathogen and disease. Altogether, this study provides new genetic insights to devise more effective disease management strategies.
