Utilization of carbon dioxide as the working fluid in enhanced geothermal systems

The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) in enhanced geothermal systems (EGSs) has been proposed due to the unique characteristics of CO2 in the EGS environment. The findings of the study reveal that CO2 has the potential to successfully induce an extensive fracture network under extreme geothermal environments. Furthermore, the studies conclude that the flow characteristics of CO2-induced geothermal reservoirs are superior to that of water-fractured reservoirs under similar environmental conditions. Hence, the coupling of geothermal energy extraction with deep geological sequestration of CO2 can be considered as a sustainable approach to address the world energy demand.
