Urban youth, their alcohol consumption and associated risk within three ethnic groups in Malaysia

Chinese populated areas have the highest density of alcohol outlets. Self-administered questionnaire completed by 326 respondents. Those who had at least 1 family member who consumed alcohol; 72% had tried alcohol, 48% were current consumers, and 30% were binge drinkers. More than half of the binge drinkers were Indians followed by Chinese at 39% and Malays at 8%. Those who binge drink were nearly 3 times more likely to be forced into sexual intercourse and 3.5 times more likely forced to do sexual acts than non-drinkers. Binge consumers were also 17.5 times more likely to smoke compared to current consumers.
