Understanding the health effects of water and hygiene interventions in low- and middle-income countries

Millions of people living in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) lack adequate access to safe and sufficient water supplies for drinking and hygiene purposes. This research aimed to assess respiratory health impacts in such settings via a systematic review of existing literature. It also aimed to evaluate health effects of a community-level water and hygiene intervention in rural southern India, and examine challenges in implementation, evaluation and scalability of such interventions. Findings can be used to help inform future research, policy and practice with the ultimate goal of substantially improving the health of those living in LMICs.
