This thesis examines the dynamics of news translation as observed in the interlingual coverage of the Middle East refugee crisis in a contested global mediascape of ideologically-motivated information flows. The thesis adopts an analytical approach that incorporates the interdisciplinary analytical tools of critical discourse analysis (CDA) within the comparative framework of translation studies. The findings contribute to a greater understanding of the role of news translators as intercultural mediators, with the analytical tools of CDA offering a robust framework for explaining the tension in the mediative role of news translators between challenging and reinforcing discourses emanating from disparate geo-political settings.
