Transition metal/nitrogen doped carbon material is one of the most studied areas which can be widely applied to applications stretching from energy production and storage to sustainability and medical uses. However, the exact nature of the active sites of catalysts synthesized by carbonization method is still ambiguous. Therefore, this thesis aims to synthesize highly efficient carbon materials as electrocatalysts and widen the understanding of the relationship between mechanism and active sites in electrocatalysts. In this thesis, four novel methods have been developed for fabricating carbon materials with different morphology as effective electrocatalysts, including nanospheres, nanocubes, hollow nanoparticles and 2D nanosheets.
