Trajectories of cognitive function in later life: predictors and outcomes

thesis
posted on 2023-02-01, 08:15 authored by ZIMU WU
Cognitive function refers to the ability to think, learn and remember. This thesis discovered diverse patterns of cognitive changes across cognitive domains in community-dwelling older individuals. In addition, a higher risk of dementia, physical disability and death were observed among those whose cognitive function was consistently low or declined over time. In contrast, better cognitive performance was more common in individuals with higher education, alcohol intake, greater physical and mental status, and normal cardiometabolic function. This research indicates the importance of regular cognitive assessment, healthy lifestyles, social cohesion and prevention of chronic diseases and conditions, in promoting healthy cognitive ageing.
