The work of this thesis involved the design and execution of the Grollo-Ruzzene Young Women’s Health study (GR study), involving 7000 Australian women, aged 18-39 years, who each completed a comprehensive online questionnaire. Sub-groups provided a blood sample and ovarian ultrasound. This research documented blood sex hormone levels for young women and their association with the key factors used in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Uncertainty in the accuracy of the diagnosis of PCOS was demonstrated due to loosely defined diagnostic criteria resulting in high risk of misdiagnosis of this condition.
