Tourism Social Movements: Achieving Community Outcomes

This thesis investigates how and why tourism social movements (SM) can achieve successful community outcomes. Tourism growth generates permanent changes to host communities. Often, tourism neglects community goals. Against this background, some communities respond in the way of a SM. The specific dynamics through which a tourism SM achieves community outcomes have not been sufficiently explained. Using an in-depth case-study approach, I explored an exceptional tourism-community example; Pichilemu, Chile. A SM emerged and appeared to address tourism-induced change. An area proposed for tourism development was protected as a wave sanctuary.
