The housing market within Melbourne is becoming increasingly difficult to enter into. Tiny homes have been seen as a more affordable means of owning a home. However, land is still the primary expense when buying a property, and tiny homes do not address this. Additionally, there are legal barriers that prevent tiny homes being used as the primary residence on unused land. This research repositions the value of a tiny home away from the narrative advertised in popular media, as a cheaper home, to align more closely with observed real-world use cases. The resulting design acts as additional occupancy on a rental property within Greater Melbourne, supporting amenity for sleep, study, relaxation and storage.
