The development of students’ critical thinking is an important and transformative educational outcome, and teachers are best positioned to realise it. Therefore, this thesis provides an examination of how teachers understand critical thinking. It also provides a comprehensive and clear conceptualisation of critical thinking to facilitate a shared understanding among educators. The thesis culminates in calls to further develop teachers’ understanding and reconnect with moral drivers for education, that teachers may be positioned to fulfil their potential as figures of intellectual empowerment and develop critical thinking among students.
