Thermo-energy and thermo-economic performance of closely spaced energy piles

This thesis examines the thermal and economic performance of closely spaced energy piles. It identifies that intermittent operation of the ground source heat pump improves the geothermal energy utilisation and reduces the thermal interaction between the piles due to lower thermal impacts in the ground, compared to continuous operation of the ground source heat pump. Also, the economic and environmental benefits of energy piles are significant for buildings with yearly heating and cooling demand and are higher for energy pile systems with greater pile spacing, longer pile lengths and larger number of piles operating as energy piles.
