Prolonged exposure of MSW landfill basal compacted clay liners (CCLs) to elevated waste temperatures and seasonal elevated temperatures (ETs) may cause them to experience desiccation cracking, which would result in the release of MSW contaminants to the environment and endangering of human health. This research investigated into the adverse effects imposed by ETs on CCLs, and assessed the effectiveness of employing rockwool insulation and cooling pipes to alleviate the undesirable impact of heat suffered by CCLs. Research findings revealed the thermal and desiccation behaviour of CCLs exposed to ETs in the presence and absence of rockwool insulation and cooling pipes.
