This PhD project involved the investigation of dispensing and prescribing patterns of blood sugar lowering medications in Australia, among people with type 2 diabetes. It utilised large, national databases, to elucidate which blood sugar lowering medications were dispensed as initial treatments for type 2 diabetes, and the rates at which additional or alternative diabetes medications were supplied. This project also involved an analysis of the types of blood sugar lowering medications prescribed for older, frail people hospitalised with type 2 diabetes, and whether newer agents are as effective as older agents in preventing cardiovascular events and death in this population.
