This thesis investigates the role of inflammation in driving autoimmune disease by utilising an experimental animal model of lupus. The findings suggest that therapeutic agents targeting mediators of inflammation may be an effective adjunct therapy, and demonstrate that consuming a diet high in fibre can moderate systemic inflammation and prevent kidney damage. This work also highlights the important regulatory role of the immune cell receptor CD11b in controlling the progression of inflammation and autoimmune disease. Altogether these studies offer distinct prospects for improving current lupus treatment.
