The Predynastic and Early Dynastic collection forms a significant part of the Egyptian collection in the National Gallery of Victoria. This collection as a whole is currently being studied for publication by Dr C.A. Hope.
As state earlier, the majority of the material in the collection was excavated at the cemeteries of Diospolis Parva, in Upper Egypt. This site was excavated by Flinders Petrie in 1898-99, as will be discussed in the following chapter, and material from there excavations was allocated to Melbourne by the Egypt Exploration Fund (E.E.F) in 189?. In 1897-98 Petrie excavated at the site of Dendera and material from these excavations was also allocated to Melbourne, along with the Diospolis Parva material, in 1898. The material was presented to the Public Library, Museums and National Gallery of Victoria, at the end of 1898, although the objects themselves did not arrive until 16th January, 1899.
