This thesis investigates what is learned with the visual perceptual learning (VPL) of face identity, and where face identity VPL occurs within the brain. The first study investigated what is learned at a subjective level, and found that conscious knowledge accessibility was not improved by face identity VPL. The second study investigated what is learned at an objective level, and found that task-relevant facial dimensions was not learned with face identity VPL. The final study investigated where face identity VPL occurs in the brain, and found that the right occipital face area is not causally involved in its early consolidation.
