The transition from high school to college is in itself a process of adjustment that has the potential to put students under significant levels of stress. This study explores the college experience of low-income students, recipients of government financial aid, studying at an elite university in Colombia. Focusing on the academic and social challenges these students faced to adapt to their new environment, the study develops a model to understand the relationship between students' pre-college characteristics and the university's institutional values and practices. Findings revealed that a positive perception of the college environment, institutional support, and membership in a student organization can boost students' sense of belonging.
