The epidemiology and prevention of intentional deaths from suicide and resident-to-resident aggression among nursing home residents in Australia

Despite living in a supervised care environment, nursing home residents are at risk of dying from potentially preventable causes such as suicide and physical assaults between residents. This thesis examines how often and why these deaths occur in Australia between 2000 and 2013, using information gathered by the coroners when they investigated these deaths. Experts and stakeholders with experience in aged care were asked to make suggestions about how these deaths could be prevented through improved care and processes. The findings contribute new information to this under-researched area, helping to develop strategies that will reduce harm among vulnerable older adults.
