In recent years, flavoured dairy milk beverages have been identified as the possible ‘gold-standard’ of exercise recovery nutrition, owing to their close alignment with current recovery guidelines. However, these guidelines do not consider the role of the gastrointestinal tract and immune system in digestion, absorption and assimilation of recovery nutrition. This thesis examined the effects of a flavoured dairy milk beverage in comparison to other commonly consumed dairy and non-dairy recovery beverages, on global markers of exercise recovery, including refuelling of energy stores, repair of muscle, rehydration, restoration of immune function, regulation of the gastrointestinal tract, and subsequent exercise performance.
