Basal cellular processes such as mRNA translation or cellular mitosis are essential to development. Loss of basal cellular processes during embryogenesis can result in broad developmental defects. Using the zebrafish animal model, the loss of two basal cellular process genes, s415 and cep57 was characterised to better understand their role during embryogenesis. Loss of s415 causes numerous defects that arise during organogenesis. Loss of the centrosomal gene cep57 causes broad defects that arise during gastrulation. Both genes were confirmed to be essential for vertebrate development and advance our understanding of the cellular basis of development and disease.
