Offspring sizes vary at all scales of organisation, but the reasons remain unclear. This thesis tested several classic theories regarding offspring-size using a marine invertebrate system. Results from this thesis provide several, previously anticipated, mechanisms for the maintenance of offspring-size variation. Life history theory should now be revised to incorporate these effects.
