The Transmigration and Popular Reception of Mulan in the Anglophone World

thesis
posted on 2023-06-26, 23:06 authored by CHENGLONG ZHOU
This thesis studies the transmigration of the story of Mulan across the East and the West. It pays particular attention to how Mulan shifts form and content while transmigrating across time, languages, geographies, genres, media, politics, etc., from China to the Anglophone world. It sheds light on a variety of Mulan’s disparate images and figures created by both the professional readers and the popular readers. Given the fact that previous literary studies have insufficiently addressed Mulan’s popular cultural forms, this thesis, overall, argues that the popular reception of Mulan also constitutes a part of her transmigration and literary variation.
