This study focuses on the development of early career teachers (ECTs)’ competence during their initial teaching period. This study employs a qualitative method. It examines 55 teacher education policies and three education laws between 1949 and 2019 in China. Data from interviews include nine ECTs, two of their mentors and two school administrators from Riverside High School in Henan province, China. In findings, this study identifies 11 competences for Chinese teachers in five periods of historical trajectory as well as the challenges they encounter and strategies they can use to improve their teacher competences through professional development.
