The Controls on the Thermal Structure of the Tropical Troposphere and Their Representation in CMIP6

Severe weather in the tropics affects many people but there is still uncertainty surrounding the factors influencing these events. This thesis investigates the controls on tropical convective stability and how they are represented in computer models of the climate. It identifies a relationship between stability and humidity within regions of active convection and discovers that climate models do not always reproduce this relationship accurately.
