The Conceptualisation and Measurement of Multidimensional Apathy in Huntington's Disease: A Mixed Method Examination

Huntington’s disease (HD) is neurodegenerative condition associated with disabling neuropsychiatric changes, most commonly – apathy. Recent research emphasises the multidimensionality of apathy, describing cognitive, behavioural and emotional facets. How these dimensions affect people with HD is unknown, as is the best way to measure them. The overarching goal of this thesis was to study multidimensional apathy in HD by applying several measurement approaches. Using questionnaires, ambulatory monitors, experimental neuroeconomic tasks and qualitative interviews, we showed that dimensions of apathy are present and readily measurable in HD. Our findings have clinical and theoretical implications for the management of apathy syndromes in HD.
