The Characterisation of Novel Pathways for the Induction of Mammalian Mitophagy

thesis
posted on 2020-10-29, 23:29 authored by WAI KIT LAM
Most cells in the human body are in a non-dividing state called quiescence. If quiescence does not function correctly, diseases such as fibrosis or cancer can develop. Inside cells, organelles called mitochondria supply energy. To remain healthy, mitochondria must go through disposal (called mitophagy) and renewal. This thesis discovers in quiescent cells, more mitochondria go through disposal than in dividing cells. It shows that mitophagy triggers renewal of mitochondria and helps quiescent cells to stay healthy. A new mechanism of mitophagy was identified. The findings ultimately could be used to develop drugs that prevent these quiescent cells from causing disease.
