Challenging behaviour in the classroom is a concern for teachers, parents and community in Indonesia. The study provided new insights into how teachers perceive and respond to challenging behaviours in one region of the country. The study revealed some factors that could be integrated into a professional learning program so that teachers use more positive and proactive classroom management strategies. Teachers will need ongoing support and training to improve their knowledge and skills to use effective classroom management practice. A series of implications are identified that may have significance for policymakers, teacher educators and researchers in Indonesia and beyond.
