This thesis proposes a systematic framework to select and assess the sustainability of carbon capture and utilisation technologies for a specific region. Using the Australian economy as a case study, it quantifies the benefits of producing ethanol by using electrochemistry and CO2 from the atmosphere. The framework proves to be useful at identifying the main areas of focus when using an early-stage technology, uncovering the non-evident benefits of carbon capture and utilisation and promoting its widespread use as a carbon mitigation mechanism to tackle climate change.
