Supporting Reflection of Team Communication in Healthcare Simulation through Multimodal Learning Analytics

thesis
posted on 2025-07-01, 08:04 authored by Linxuan Zhao
Effective communication is vital in healthcare, where team coordination can directly impact patient safety. Simulation-based learning provides a safe environment for healthcare learners to develop communication skills by working with lifelike scenarios. Traditionally, video reviews support post-simulation reflections (debriefs), but they are time-intensive. This PhD project designed a system using multimodal learning analytics (MMLA) to automate the analysis and visualization of team communication. Conducted with Monash University’s nursing program, the project involved 252 learners and 6 educators. The outcomes benefit educators, healthcare practitioners, and researchers by enhancing feedback processes and advancing analytics for dynamic learning environments.
