Sleep and insomnia education for psychologists: From training to practice

thesis
posted on 2023-06-26, 06:30 authored by HAILEY JADE MEAKLIM
Despite the importance of sleep for mental health, psychologists receive minimal education in treating sleep problems. Untreated insomnia can worsen mental health conditions and lead to poorer mental health outcomes. Therefore, this thesis aimed to examine and improve sleep education for psychologists in Australia. We found that almost half of trainee psychologists receive no sleep education, so we developed a sleep education workshop and rolled it out across Victoria, with trainee psychologists reporting increased sleep knowledge and clinical skills to manage insomnia. Sleep education workshops can be scaled to deliver foundational sleep education to improve insomnia management in mental healthcare.
