This thesis examines the cognitive theory of situational awareness and how it impacts paramedicine. It reviews the literature, adapts a theoretical framework, and then applies that framework to paramedicine studies. It concludes that very little was previously known about situational awareness in paramedicine and that paramedics do not possess high levels of situational awareness. It also identifies a targeted educational approach that can increase situational awareness in paramedics during out-of-hospital emergency calls.
