Sergei Prokofiev and the Five Lines: A Semiological and Recordings-based Study of the Composer’s Piano Performance Practices

thesis
posted on 2024-07-02, 01:31 authored by JOSHUA TAYLOR MCCUSKER
This thesis examines the recordings of composer-pianist Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) playing his own piano works. It establishes a new analytical framework for identifying character in his works, and reveals incongruence between contemporary performance practices and Prokofiev's own.
