Sensitivity of the human circadian system to light in depression

thesis
posted on 2019-03-14, 00:21 authored by Elise Maree McGlashan
Depression is associated with abnormal function of the circadian system or 'body clock', but the mechanism for this is not understood. This thesis identifies a vulnerability in the circadian system in patients with depression which may lead to disruption: altered light sensitivity. It further demonstrates a profound impact of antidepressant medication on light sensitivity, which has important implications for the treatment of depression.
