Seclusion in Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Units

thesis
posted on 2024-07-30, 01:50 authored by MIRIAM KATARZYNA YURTBASI
My PhD research focused on seclusion in adolescent psychiatric units, exploring factors related to seclusion and its effects on both staff and patients. The study found that staff gender and temporary nurses on shift were associated with increased the risk of seclusion. Interviews showed that staffing on units should be based on acuity rather than occupancy. Both secluded and non-secluded patients reported satisfaction with their stay, but those who were secluded experienced more dissatisfaction and ongoing negative effects. The research emphasised the need to ensure staffing capacity, improve communication, and involve young people in their treatment, to ensure the safety and well-being of adolescents in psychiatric care.
