Loss of skeletal muscle mass and function called sarcopenia is increasingly common in the older population. At present there is currently no treatment for the loss of skeletal muscle mass. This thesis examines the underlying mechanisms to muscle growth and muscle breakdown, its relationship to hormonal systems and the use of simple measurement tools in a clinical setting to detect sarcopenia in older women.
