Heart failure affects 1 in 20 Australians. Approximately half of these patients develop kidney failure and this is termed cardiorenal syndrome. There are currently no treatments for kidney dysfunction in patients with cardiorenal syndrome. The current thesis investigates the pathways involved in the pathogenesis of this disease state. In particular, the pathogenic roles of oxidative stress and nitric oxide deficiency were explored. Accordingly, potential therapeutic interventions that can target these pathways were tested. In conclusion, treatments that can target the pathological imbalance between oxidative stress and nitric oxide holds strong promise in the treatment of cardiorenal syndrome.
