A significant body of research has shown that natural elements in urban public space can be mentally restorative. Public art is an important component of urban design for public spaces, yet little research has examined its relationship with mental restoration. This thesis uses a case study of Melbourne Docklands to explore the relationship between public art and restorative environments. Some sculpture was found to stimulate restoration by promoting an engagement with nature and exploration of the environment. However, attention needs to be paid to scale and the placement of sculpture or it produces responses of aversion.
