Religious Discourses in ELT in Indonesia: Lecturers' Ideological Becoming in Institutional Practices

thesis
posted on 2020-09-08, 04:53 authored by Muhalim Muhalim
This study explores how language educators navigate relevant linguistic, religious and economic ideologies as they teach English in a faith-based higher education sector that is currently undergoing neo-liberal reforms. It demonstrates some of the complexities of teaching English within the Indonesian context, especially in relation to the embedding of Islamic beliefs within their teaching. In the main, this study highlights a need for transcending the tensions that arise when diverse ideologies interact and for focusing more attention on the ideological becoming of language educators who construct a transideological space – a third space of English language education in religious institutions.
