This thesis critiques dominant narratives from tech companies that portray virtual reality (VR) as a medium capable of transcending the physical body, arguing instead that these narratives overlook the material experiences of diverse users, particularly marginalised people. This work provides an alternative account of how we think about VR by focusing on the complexity of embodied and emotional responses to VR, and how developers can better design for these realities, rather than the fantasies of perfect embodiment promoted by tech companies.
