The excessive use of alcohol has been shown to be associated with various adverse consequences and health problems such as fatal and non-fatal injury, blackouts, suicide attempts, unintended pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and violence. In the Australian context, alcohol has been consistently associated with the second-highest costs to the Australian community after tobacco. The Australian Defence Force in 2011 acknowledged that more needed to be done to address alcohol consumption and related harms within its workforce. This thesis examined the use of alcohol in a single group of young Royal Australian Navy trainees and the effectiveness of an intervention, the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth or P.A.R.T.Y. program which had not previously been used in a military setting.
